Temple of the Toothππ
In 1988, the Temple of the Tooth and the Holy City of Kandy were declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. At the cremation ceremony of the Buddha, we have placed the left tooth relic of the four remaining tooth relics in the Temple of the Tooth. The primary qualification of every king who ruled the country in the past to establish himself as the king of the country and to symbolize his sovereignty was the presence of the Tooth Relic in his custody.
It is said that the Temple of the Tooth was completed during the reign of King Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe (1707 - 1739 AD). Every year on Esala Poya Day, a procession is held in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The palace where the Tooth Relic is kept, the Esala Perahera and the rituals associated with the Sacred Tooth Relic are our national heritage and it is our national duty to preserve it for our future generations.
